Coonabarabran will have a Bike Plan by July 2004 according to John Stephenson, the consultant hired by Coonabarabran Shire Council to prepare the Plan. The Bike Plan will recommend safe and attractive bike routes and cycleways within the township of Coonabarabran. The project will be managed by a sub-committee of the Local Traffic Committee of Council.

The benefits to individuals and communities of safe bike routes and cycleways is well documented and recognised. Benefits include: improved health from exercise; enjoyment of the impressive bush and built up areas of town; a clean,  environmentally friendly transport system; and, an attraction for tourists. The RTA is spending $251m to build 200kms per year in NSW.

One of the features of the Plan will be the community survey. All residents in Coonabarabran will be sent a survey form requesting suggestions from people as to where the bike routes should be located. Additional surveys can be obtained from the Coonabarabran Community Centre, 71 John St, Coonabarabran or by contacting John Stephenson on Phone 68423099 or email
